National Reconciliation Week took place from May 27th to June 3rd, 2024, with the theme “Now More Than Ever”. This theme emphasises the importance of coming together to strengthen relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

TSH staff participated in various cultural events during the week, with notable highlights in Karratha and Cockburn. Our Chevron Pilbara Ear Health Team attended an inspiring Reconciliation Breakfast in Karratha. They embraced the opportunity to connect with residents from the City of Karratha and were deeply moved by the diverse regional voices, engaging keynote speakers and powerful truth-telling stories shared at the breakfast.

Elaine, our Community Engagement and Liaison Officer, shared the day’s highlights, including a conversation with Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi man Clinton Walker, and event MC, Dr. Helen Sadler.

In another significant event, Louise and Gayle, members of our Outreach team, attended a Yarning Circle with Professor and Elder Len Collard, organised by the City of Cockburn. Len shared the Dreamtime story of the area, “The Waakarl Story,” published with the Catholic Education Office of WA in 2000, and some children’s stories he wrote in the Noongar language. Len also spoke about his work with various stakeholders to correct previous inaccuracies in Noongar language documentation.

“Len has many life accomplishments, but I believe his greatest is sharing his Aboriginal culture and stating the truths of his people,” said Gayle. “I was very pleased to attend this yarning circle and hope to participate in more in the future to continue my education and understanding of Aboriginal culture.”

National Reconciliation Week is a vital reminder of the ongoing journey toward unity and understanding. TSH remains committed to fostering meaningful connections and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
